Chappie’s Wing Walk

After months of planning, persuading lots of very kind suppliers, customers and friends to donate raffle prizes and selling a mass of raffle tickets to help him reach his charity fundraising goal, the moment finally came for Stuart ‘Chappie’ Chappell from our Uckfield branch to take to the skies over Upminster strapped to the top of a bi-plane.

Over the last 6 years Parkers’ staff have climbed mountains, run marathons, cycled, swam, taken on the gruelling Iron Man Triathlon, and knocked each other about in a boxing ring in order to raise money for our partner charity Teenage Cancer Trust, but for anyone not keen on heights this promised to be the most daring yet.

The wingwalk took place on a lovely sunny Sunday morning in August at the Damyns Private Airstrip in Upminster, Essex.

Once attached onto the wing for the walk, Chappie was ready for his intense flight of fancy, wowing the expectant crowd and his supporters with low-level fly pasts from varying angles of approach, taking a thrilling dive and braving a zoom-climb manoeuvre before finishing the wingwalk with a run and break finale – all at speeds of up to 135mph.

In Chappie’s own words: “I loved every minute of it, especially the 120mph dive followed by a zero G moment at the end of it”.

For this particular challenge, in addition to collecting for TCT, Chappie was raising money for Great Ormond Street Children’s Hospital in memory of Noah Thatcher. Noah sadly passed away at just 10 months old last October after spending most of his short life in Great Ormond Street Hospital battling major brain damage. Chappie was keen to help Noah’s parents Scott and Livi, close friends of Chappie and his family, raise money for GOSH to show their appreciation for the care they and Noah received during his time there.

The serious side of all this fun, was to raise money for Teenage Cancer Trust and Great Ormond Street Childrens Hospital, and thanks to the generosity of so many wonderful people, both in buying tickets, and also helping to sell the tickets, the total raised was a fantastic £2815 which will be split equally between the 2 charities.

Thank you so much to everyone who has helped make this such a success.
